Skipping ahead some, William is put in a ball game when someone is injured and can't play. Playing a sport for a long time, you get thirsty, right? Well this man(Honac-Fey), mad at William for taking his place next to the king, poisoned the water, killing all of the players, except for William. Betty saved his life, knowing what the man was planning and stopping William from drinking. I guess you have to do what you need to do to get things done, even though it failed in this case.
Although he didn't kill William, he did get a hold of, and wreck havoc upon a gem William had been carrying for the king. To restore the power of this gem, William had to go through some sort of bonding ritual with the sacred tree of the land. For a short while, he was one with the tree. As strange as it seems, that would be an interesting thing to experience.
